Cyberwars @ UVA

- A GenCyber Camp -

June 18-22, 2018

Charlottesville, VA

Welcome to the gencyber Cyberwars at uva Camp

We are excited to announce the GenCyber Cyberwars at the University of Virginia Camp happening this summer June 18-22, 2018. Our goal is to help high school teachers learn about cybersecurity principles and develop an understanding of them through exercises and hands-on activities. This is a week full of exciting collaborative and real-world learning which will include working with experts in the field as well as current cybersecurity professionals. You will compete in a Capture the Flag Competition (CTF) during camp and develop a CTF to host during the 2018-2019 school year. We hope that you will join us for this amazing experience.

What is the Cyberwars @ UVA Camp?

The Cyberwars Camp is a residential camp, sponsored by the GenCyber program, for 25 high school teachers who are interested in providing their students with exposure to cybersecurity in their classes, and to provide opportunities for deeper exploration for interested students.

The camp is designed to introduce the foundations of cybersecurity, including ethical and legal issues. In addition, participants will actively engage in many hands-on activities that convey important concepts, and have opportunities to interact with the technology necessary to support a deeper understanding of the curriculum.

When is the Cyberwars @ UVA Camp?

The Cyberwars @ UVA Camp will be held June 18-22, 2018.

Where is the Cyberwars @ UVA Camp?

The Cyberwars @ UVA Camp will be in Rice Hall at the University of Virginia. The physical address is:

85 Engineer's Way,

Charlottesville, VA 22904.

Why should I participate in the Cyberwars @ UVA Camp?

Besides learning the cybersecurity principles and having the opportunity to perform hands-on cybersecurity exercises, participants will spend some time working together as a team while participating in a Capture the Flag (CTF) competition.

The topics covered include:
  - Developing a Security Mindset
  - Cybersecurity First Principles

  - Cyber Attack Phases and Defenses

  - Cryptography

  - Networks and Protocols
  - Web Security

  - E-mail Security

We will have guest speakers including academic security researchers and practitioners from industry, who will be able to give the participants a real-world view of the current threats related to cybersecurity. There will be additional evening events including; “An Evening with the Experts”, where we will invite the participants to attend dinner with several cybersecurity professionals, facilitating personal connections with industry leaders.

We want participants to be able to share what they learn from the camp with their students and colleagues. We will work closely with you during the camp on the topics and material you can use at your school.

Participants will form working groups with a primary goal of using what they are learning in their classroom by hosting an online cybersecurity Capture the Flag competition with their school's students. We will have dedicated sessions during the camp to work with you towards achieving that goal.

What are participants required to do after the camp?

After you finish the camp, you will also be committing to participating in four virtual meetings during the 2018-2019 school year, teaching at least one unit (approximately 3 weeks or 8-10; 90-minute classes) on cybersecurity during the 2018-2019 school year, and hosting a Capture The Flag (CTF) competition at your school during the 2018-2019 school year. Finally, you will report on your students' involvement and activities for 2018-2019 and student recruitment for the 2019-2020 school year as requested.
